Spider-Man: The Movie We (Unfortunately) Never Saw

28 Apr 2023  |  centralcomics.com
In the early 1980s, Stan Lee believed Marvel characters could be successful in Hollywood, leading to a partnership with writers Ted Newsom and John Brancato. However, the rights to Spider-Man were owned by Cannon Films, led by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. Despite initial setbacks with other productions, Cannon acquired the Spider-Man rights in the mid-1980s. Various writers and directors, including Leslie Steven, Joseph Zito, and Barney Cohen, were involved in the project, which faced numerous script changes and financial challenges. Bob Hoskins was considered for the role of Doctor Octopus, and Scott Leva was involved as a stunt double. The project's budget escalated, and Cannon's financial constraints led to further complications. After Golan left Cannon, he formed 21st Century Films and continued to pursue the Spider-Man film. James Cameron was later brought on by Carolco, which led to legal disputes with Golan. The rights eventually went to Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produced the Spider-Man film with David Koepp adapting James Cameron's outline into a script, and contributions from Alvin Sargent and Scott Rosenberg.
