Court postpones Lúcio Funaro's return to Papuda once again

28 Jul 2017  |  veja.abril.com.br
Lúcio Bolonha Funaro will remain in custody at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília until August 11, following a decision by Judge Vallisney Oliveira of the 10th Federal Court of Brasília, who granted a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office to postpone Funaro's return to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex. Funaro is negotiating a plea bargain with the Public Prosecutor's Office, which could implicate President Michel Temer and others in corruption schemes involving the PMDB. The plea bargain is expected to cover fraudulent activities affecting the FI-FGTS fund managed by Caixa Econômica Federal and may include allegations of Temer requesting millions for campaigns. Geddel Vieira Lima, a close associate of Temer, is under house arrest and has been accused of pressuring Funaro's family regarding the plea bargain.

Approval of Temer drops from 10% to 5%, says Ibope

27 Jul 2017  |  veja.abril.com.br
A recent Ibope poll reveals that Brazilian President Michel Temer's approval rating has halved from 10% to 5%. The survey, commissioned by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), also shows an increase in negative evaluations, with 70% of respondents rating the government as bad or terrible. The poll was conducted from July 13 to 16, interviewing 2,000 people across 125 municipalities, with a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of two percentage points. Renato da Fonseca of CNI attributes the low approval to the ongoing economic crisis and the impact of allegations from the JBS case. Temer's trust and governance approval ratings have also declined. This marks the lowest approval in Ibope's historical series, matching former President José Sarney's low in 1989 and former President Dilma Rousseff's in December 2015.

Judge orders suspension of fuel tax increase

25 Jul 2017  |  veja.abril.com.br
Federal substitute judge Renato Borelli of the 20th Federal Court in Brasília overturned President Michel Temer's decree increasing PIS and Cofins taxes on fuels, following a public action filed by lawyer Carlos Alexandre Klomfahs. The judge cited constitutional infringement, noting the lack of a 90-day period between the announcement and application of the tax increase. The government, yet to be notified, plans to appeal through the Advocacy-General of the Union. Experts Tathiane Piscitelli and Antonio Esteves Jr. support the suspension, stating the increase did not respect constitutional provisions. The decree aimed to generate an additional 10.4 billion reais in revenue to cover the public account deficit.

He also criticized the defense's conduct and reiterated the absence of any omission, obscurity, or contradiction in his judgment.

Potholes pose risk and damage, leaving São Paulo residents in a 'minefield'

02 Mar 2017  |  Folha de S.Paulo
São Paulo residents are facing a significant problem with potholes in the city's streets, exacerbated by summer rains. The issue, which became more pronounced at the end of Fernando Haddad's administration and continued into João Doria's term, has led to worsened traffic, increased accident risks, and vehicle damage. Despite the city hall's efforts to increase repair teams and address the issue, the number of potholes filled has drastically reduced since 2013, and complaints about street conditions have risen by 39.6%. The Doria administration is considering shutting down the city's asphalt plant and is working on a new bidding process for more efficient and cost-effective services. Meanwhile, the TCM has blocked a process for purchasing asphalt mix.

Poker clubs grow with loyal audience and daily tournaments

12 Dec 2016  |  Folha de S.Paulo
Over the past decade, poker has seen significant growth in Brazil, with 7 million players and the professionalization of clubs creating a new market. Clubs host hundreds of fans daily, with tournaments starting in the evening and ending in the morning. The business model involves entry fees, with a portion going to the house and the rest awarded to top players. Despite legal uncertainties regarding poker's classification as a game of chance, jurisprudence favors its recognition as a sport. Investment in clubs can be substantial, but the lack of specific regulations poses challenges for entrepreneurs. The poker community considers it an intellectual sport, supported by judicial decisions and technical expertise. In 2012, poker was included in the Ministry of Sport's event calendar, highlighting the need for legal security for business owners in this industry.
