Foreign Minister of Northern Cyprus Özersay: We poked the status quo with the reopening of Varosha

28 Sep 2019  |  euronews
Kudret Özersay, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Northern Cyprus, discussed the decision to reopen the city of Varosha under Turkish Cypriot administration after 45 years, challenging the status quo and the Greek Cypriot administration's response. He criticized the lack of progress in Cyprus problem negotiations and the damage to Turkish Cypriots from the status quo. Özersay highlighted the unilateral nature of the decision, contrasting it with the Greek Cypriot side's approach to hydrocarbon resources in the region. He emphasized the importance of Turkish Cypriot self-governance and rejected the notion that the deadlock in negotiations is due to Turkey, asserting that Turkish Cypriots would never accept being governed by Greek Cypriots. Özersay also addressed international perceptions and the role of the UN and EU, stating that the Turkish Cypriot side is determined to change the conditions and not perpetuate the status quo.

Cyprus is at a very complicated juncture

20 May 2018  |  Haberatör
Professor Yücel Vural from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at DAÜ discussed the complex situation in Cyprus, highlighting the anticipation of a strategic agreement postulated by UN Secretary-General Guterres after the collapse at Crans Montana. Vural noted the clear differences between President Mustafa Akıncı and Turkey, which have not been openly expressed. He also mentioned the increased interest of the US in the Cyprus issue due to unresolved crises in the Middle East, such as Syria. The upcoming elections in Turkey are seen as a critical point that will influence the Cyprus issue, with expectations for the resumption of negotiations after the elections. Civil society organizations in both the North and South of Cyprus may influence the leaders to return to the negotiation table, but a mobilization similar to that during the Annan Plan seems unlikely at present.

2 Billion TL Egg Trade!

20 Jan 2017  |  Gündem Kıbrıs Gazetesi - Kıbrıs Haber
In Turkey, following illegal abortion activities, an illegal 'egg donation' operation has been uncovered at IVF centers. Individuals posing as nurses on social media are targeting financially needy young girls, offering up to 2,000 TL for egg donations, which can be done every two months. Despite laws prohibiting trade and intermediation for material gain in cell, tissue, and organ donation, IVF centers are engaging in egg and sperm trade, offering 1,500 TL for high-quality eggs and 1,000 TL for lower quality. These eggs are then sold to childless families for up to ten times the purchase price. The article highlights the exploitation of hopes for commercial gain and the disregard for legal age limits in egg donation, revealing a significant profit-making scheme in the fertility treatment industry.
