Lawyers and family members of former detained members of the Guinean government demand trial and their release

13 Mar 2024  |  www.voaportugues.com
The trial of former Guinean Finance Minister Suleimane Seide and Secretary of State for the Treasury António Monteiro, detained since November 30 for endorsing an $11 million loan to 11 businessmen, was postponed without a new date. On Tuesday, their lawyers and family members demanded a trial date be set as soon as possible and called for their immediate release. Lawyer Luís Vaz Martins criticized the trial's postponement without prior notice and argued for the release of his clients, stating there is no reason to keep them in pre-trial detention now that the investigation phase has concluded and charges have been made. Following these statements, relatives and friends sent a letter to various authorities and organizations describing the detainees' conditions as 'terrible', exacerbated by a general strike of prison guards at the Judicial Police Detention Center in Bissau.

Analysts like Carlos Vamain argue that Cabral's legacy should not be monopolized by any party, and sociologist Nardi de Sousa emphasizes Cabral's global significance and the need for more study rather than institutional blockages.
