Togo President Extends 15-Year Rule With Election Win
Togo President Gnassingbe secured a fourth term with 72% of the vote, while opposition candidate Agbeyome Kodjo received 18%. Voter turnout was 76%. Gnassingbe has been in power since 2005, following his father's death. Togo's economy grew by 4.9% last year, with Ecobank Transnational Inc. and Asky Airlines headquartered in Lome. Constitutional changes in May allow Gnassingbe to potentially stay in power until 2030, despite mass protests in 2017 and 2018 demanding an end to his rule.
