The bill has received a favorable opinion from the Senate Health Committee and will be voted on in the plenary session on April 29.

Inflation dropped to 6.6% in December 2023. The biggest price increases: fish, beer, and detergents

12 Apr 2024  |  romania.europalibera.org
In the last 12 months, food prices in Romania increased by 5.8%, non-food goods by 5.5%, with the highest price increases seen in fish, beer, fresh fruits, and meat. Edible oil prices significantly decreased by 27.5%. Service charges for water, sewage, sanitation, postal services, and medical care saw some of the highest increases. Among non-food goods, detergents, medicines, and footwear topped the list of price hikes. The European Commission's forecast for 2024 predicted a 9.8% inflation rate for Romania in 2023, while the National Bank of Romania's latest estimate from the previous November expected a year-end inflation rate of 7.5% for 2023. Experts and financial institutions anticipate a decrease in the inflation rate for 2024, albeit at a slower pace than previously estimated due to new taxes and duties introduced at the end of 2023, which will also be reflected in prices.

Former Mayor Cătălin Cherecheş has arrived in Romania from Germany. He is sentenced to 5 years in prison for bribery

19 Mar 2024  |  romania.europalibera.org
Cătălin Cherecheş, former mayor of Baia Mare, Romania, was extradited from Germany to Romania to serve a five-year prison sentence for bribery. After his conviction on November 24, Cherecheș fled the country under a false identity but was apprehended by police in Augsburg. His lawyer, Răzvan Doseanu, stated that Cherecheș would undergo a 21-day quarantine at Rahova Penitentiary, followed by transfers to Aiuid and then Baia Mare. Legal proceedings, including an annulment contestation at the Cluj Court of Appeal, will continue. Cherecheș's escape led to the dismissal of the head of the Border Police, Victor Ştefan Ivaşcu. The Munich Regional Court decided on March 13 to extradite Cherecheș after his lawyers unsuccessfully attempted to halt the extradition, citing poor detention conditions in Romanian prisons.

Tudorel Toader loses the position of rector of the University of Iași in favor of Liviu Maha, professor of economics

19 Mar 2024  |  Europa Liberă România
Liviu Maha won the rector position at the University of Iași against Tudorel Toader, who criticized the election process as atypical and filled with intimidation and falsehoods. Toader, a former Justice Minister and judge at the Constitutional Court, was previously contested for promoting laws that would have politically subordinated the judicial system. Maha, a professor of economics, emphasized the legitimacy and responsibility his victory represents. His mandate as rector will last until 2029, pending official confirmation by the Ministry of Education.

Imminent Famine in Gaza. Hamas No. 3 Eliminated. US-Israel Discussions on Protecting Civilians. 11 Romanians Evacuated from Gaza

19 Mar 2024  |  romania.europalibera.org
US President Joe Biden warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that an Israeli military operation in Rafah would deepen anarchy in Gaza. They agreed to meet in Washington to discuss strategies to target Hamas without a major ground operation. Biden called for an immediate ceasefire as part of a hostage release agreement, while Netanyahu reiterated Israel's commitment to its war objectives. The US and Israel are concerned that a full offensive on Rafah could worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel killed Marwan Issa, a top Hamas leader, and US forces destroyed Houthi weaponry in Yemen. USAID Administrator Samantha Power highlighted an imminent famine in Gaza and urged Israel to open more land routes for aid. The Romanian Foreign Ministry reported the evacuation of 11 Romanians from Gaza.

19 Mar 2024  |  Europa Liberă România
The Rabla Clasic and Rabla Plus programs in Romania will be conducted in two stages, starting on March 19 and August 19, 2024, with a budget of 300 million lei for Rabla Clasic and 1 billion lei for Rabla Plus. The Ministry of the Environment emphasizes the importance of financing environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Subsidies for the Rabla Plus program have been halved compared to 2023, but Minister Mircea Fechet believes the interest in electric vehicles will remain high. The government plans to gradually shift funds from Rabla Clasic, which supports the renewal of combustion engine vehicles, to Rabla Plus, which promotes electric and hybrid vehicles.

The conflict in Gaza is escalating tensions between the US and Houthi rebels. In Romania, protests by farmers and transporters continue, with failed negotiations and accusations against the police for suppressing the protests. The UK government will also sign a historic security cooperation agreement with Ukraine, formalizing support including intelligence sharing, cybersecurity, medical and military training, and defense industry cooperation. Sunak has pledged to increase the UK's financial support to over $3 billion in the next fiscal year. The announcement comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for more Western support against Russia, amid concerns of waning ally interest in the prolonged conflict. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged EU countries to step up their support, while US aid is uncertain due to internal political rivalries.

The Constanța Tribunal's decision is final. The prosecutor argued for the continuation of preventive arrest, citing the recentness of the accident and its public impact. The US, UK, and other countries have warned the Houthi rebels in Yemen of consequences for attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Donald Trump Removed from Colorado Ballot

20 Dec 2023  |  Europa Liberă România
The Supreme Court of Colorado has removed Donald Trump from the state's Republican primary presidential ballot due to a rarely used provision of the U.S. Constitution known as the insurrection clause, related to the events of January 6, 2021. This decision currently affects only the Colorado primaries scheduled for March 5. A group of Colorado voters argued that Trump should be disqualified for his role in the January 6 attack. The Colorado Supreme Court's decision is suspended until January 4 or until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the case. Trump's lawyers have stated they will challenge the decision at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Historic Agreement on Reforming the EU's Migration System. Criticism from Human Rights Organizations

20 Dec 2023  |  romania.europalibera.org
A historic agreement on the reform of the EU's migration system was announced, concluding years of negotiations. The pact, proposed by the European Commission in September 2020, includes stricter controls on migrant arrivals, closed centers near borders for rapid return of non-asylum seekers, and a mandatory solidarity mechanism among member states. Human rights organizations criticized the reform, fearing it could lead to a poorly designed, costly, and harsh system. The political agreement must be officially approved by the European Council and the European Parliament, with the aim to adopt migration laws before the European elections in June 2024. The current EU faces a significant increase in irregular arrivals and asylum applications, with over 355,000 border crossings and an estimated one million asylum requests by the end of 2023.

Marinika Tepic and Miroslav Aleksic, representatives of the coalition, demanded the annulment of the elections and announced a hunger strike until the Belgrade elections are canceled. Germany and OSCE observers reported unacceptable irregularities for an EU candidate country during Serbia's legislative elections on December 17. President Aleksandar Vučić, criticized for consolidating power and controlling the media, maintains close ties with Russia while seeking good relations with the EU. The Serbian Progressive Party claimed victory in the national parliamentary vote, while final results for Belgrade's local elections are pending.

Ukrainian forces destroyed multiple drones in the Herson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions, with civilian damage and injuries reported. Russia also claimed to have downed hostile drones over Moscow.

Warning message about the fall of drone debris received by residents in Tulcea and Galați counties

14 Dec 2023  |  romania.europalibera.org
Residents in Tulcea and Galați counties in Romania received a RO-Alert message warning them to take shelter due to indications of aerial attacks on Ukrainian territory near the Romanian border. No specific localities where the message was transmitted have been named, and no incidents have been reported in the targeted areas. The alert follows warnings from Ukrainian air forces about Russian-launched Shahed drones heading towards southern Odessa, near Romania. Romania plans to install Europe's most advanced anti-drone system at the border with Ukraine to protect against attacks from Russia. Four cases of Russian drones used against Ukraine landing in Romania have been documented, believed to be accidental with no intent to attack Romania. Monitoring in the drone incident areas has been intensified, with additional sensors installed and the Border Police taking similar measures. A crater from a presumed drone was found in Tulcea, and flight restrictions have been imposed in northern Dobrogea near the Ukraine border.

Teachers' salaries increase by 13% from January 1st

13 Dec 2023  |  romania.europalibera.org
Romanian teachers will receive a 13% salary increase from January 1st, with an additional 7% in June, according to a government ordinance draft. This is less than the 15% increase initially outlined in the Education Law. An earlier draft had proposed an even smaller increase of 8%, which the Ministry of Finance claimed was an error. Despite previous government promises that starting salaries for new teachers would reach the national average wage by 2024, current and projected salaries remain below this threshold. The government's failure to deliver on its promises and the inconsistency of unions in their negotiations have led to accusations of betrayal from protesters.

Police officers, healthcare workers, public health directorates, Ministry of Culture employees, Payment and Intervention Agency for Agriculture staff, National Institute of Statistics employees, and judicial clerks are expressing dissatisfaction with the planned 5% salary increase, demanding higher raises and equity. The protests come shortly before the government's approval of the state budget, which Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu says will include a 5% raise for all public sector workers, except dignitaries, and an increase in the minimum wage.

11 Dec 2023  |  Europa Liberă România
Andrei Baciu, recently resigned from the presidency of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), is under criminal investigation by anti-corruption prosecutors for abuse of office with particularly serious consequences. He is accused of supporting a memorandum that led to the transaction and payment of an additional 4,260,269 doses of Pfizer vaccine without any documents or analysis to attest to the necessity of the purchase. The memorandum was approved by former Prime Minister Florin Cîțu, who is also under criminal investigation in the same case. The European Commission had launched a centralized approach for vaccine procurement, which Romania participated in, but officials are accused of unjustifiably approving additional vaccine purchases worth one billion euros.

G7 Leaders Agree to Limit Russian Diamond Imports. Zelensky Warns Western Unity Is Faltering

07 Dec 2023  |  Europa Liberă România
G7 leaders have agreed to implement a set of restrictions on non-industrial diamonds extracted, processed, or produced in Russia starting January 1, with further restrictions on Russian diamonds processed in third countries beginning March 1, 2024. This adds to existing sanctions targeting Russia's financial institutions, technology imports, and fossil fuel exports due to its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. had already unilaterally banned the import of rough Russian diamonds in April 2022. The EU had been considering a ban on Russian diamonds, but Belgium had delayed the measures, citing concerns for Antwerp's diamond trade. G7 leaders condemned Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians and pledged to support Ukraine's fight for independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned against the collapse of Western unity, which Russia is banking on, and highlighted the significant pressure on the front. The White House has warned that funding for aid to Ukraine will run out by year's end without new Congressional approval, while Japan has pledged an additional $1 billion in aid, bringing its total support to $4.5 billion.

Former Prime Minister Florin Cîțu Under Criminal Investigation in Vaccine Case

06 Dec 2023  |  romania.europalibera.org
Florin Cîțu, former Prime Minister of Romania, is under criminal investigation for complicity in abuse of office with particularly serious consequences related to COVID-19 vaccine procurement. The National Anticorruption Directorate alleges that Cîțu approved the purchase of a significantly higher number of Pfizer and Moderna vaccine doses than necessary, without legal provisions or necessary analyses. Despite the accusations, Cîțu maintains that his actions were lawful. The case also implicates former Health Ministers Vlad Voiculescu and Ioana Mihăilă, with the Romanian President approving the start of their prosecution. The additional vaccines, which may have caused a state budget loss of 1 billion euros, were procured despite existing contracts being sufficient for the national vaccination campaign.
